Young companies present themselves in the brand new start-up area

According to the German government, 1,384 new start-ups were founded in Germany in the first half of 2024. This means that around 522,000 people are currently working in and for start-ups.

According to the Kassel-Marburg Chamber of Industry and Commerce, start-ups are ‘a comparatively new description of young, innovative and growth-oriented companies’. Start-ups are characterised by their innovativeness. They impress with the novelty of their product, market or business model, for example, or with the high scalability of their business model.

Four phases of a start-up

A start-up usually goes through four phases:

> the seed phase (pre-establishment phase, in which the business model is developed, refined and implemented on a trial basis in order to assess its feasibility on the market),

> the start-up phase (establishment of the company, completion and market launch of the business idea)

> emerging growth (growth phase with, ideally, rapid market penetration through targeted development of sales)

> and expansion (further development of the sales structure through diversification of products and services).

NUFAM, which takes place from 25 to 28 September 2025, offers such companies the opportunity to present themselves perfectly in an optimal industry environment for the first time.

Start-up Area at NUFAM

‘In the Start-up Area, we offer young companies an attractive and affordable complete package to create the ideal basis for customer relations and investment partnerships over four days of the trade fair. Start-ups receive a high-quality stand. The trade fair appearance is integrated into a strong communication package with a wide range of services and excellent press work,’ says Jochen Bortfeld, Project Manager of NUFAM. He is convinced that the start-up area at NUFAM is the ideal showcase for young, innovative companies in the automotive sector to meet established market players.

Benefit now from the early booking discount for NUFAM 2025

NUFAM, organised by Messe Karlsruhe, has been one of the leading trade fairs for the commercial vehicle industry since 2009. The next event, which combines the latest technology with mobility concepts of the future, will take place from 25 to 28 September 2025.

Suppliers, service providers and anyone who wants to showcase their products and get up close and personal with other industry players can still secure an early bird discount on stand space until 29 November. They can do it HERE.

"We are also creating this offer for our exhibitors to say thank you for the many years of collegial and valuable collaboration. I am delighted that a number of companies from the LCV to trailer sectors have already taken advantage of the early booking discount. With our new multifunctional area, we will be offering exhibitors even more opportunities next year to present their workshop equipment, services, tractor units and light commercial vehicles in the best possible way and to engage in dialogue with the key players in the industry. The NUFAM team is delighted to be able to plan the perfect stand and thus the optimum presentation area for each individual company," says Jochen Bortfeld, NUFAM Project Manager since 2009.

New outdoor area

Next year, the commercial vehicle trade fair will take place in all four halls of the Karlsruhe Trade Fair Centre. A new addition will be the Peter Gross Building area in the outdoor area, which has been completely renovated and adapted to the needs of exhibitors. The exhibition space at NUFAM will therefore be around 100,000 square metres.

"With our 'completely renovated' multifunctional area, 80,000 square metres of exhibition space will be available. It will be used by our own trade fairs and its optimal infrastructure will make it even easier to experience NUFAM outdoor, for example. We are looking forward to seeing how the visitors and exhibitors accept the space," says Beate Frères, Director of Own Exhibitions at Messe Karlsruhe.

The entire portfolio of the commercial vehicle industry will be represented among the exhibitors at NUFAM - in addition to suppliers of conventionally powered trucks and vans, this increasingly includes alternative drive systems. New mobility has long since arrived in Karlsruhe. Topics such as electric, hydrogen and fuel cell drives have an increasing place at NUFAM. Visitors will also receive all the information they need on digital services and telematics as well as charging infrastructure and solutions for the last mile.

NUFAM - the commercial vehicle podcast from Messe Karlsruhe launches

The commercial vehicle industry is undergoing perhaps unprecedented change. The switch from conventional drive types to alternative ones is a major challenge for many players in the industry - and will remain so for some time to come.

NUFAM is not standing still and is continuing to develop. The commercial vehicle trade fair from Karlsruhe has been showcasing the latest and future technology since 2009. Every two years, decision-makers, key players and other players from the industry meet at NUFAM.

NUFAM DAY, which took place for the second time on 20 June 2024 and will be held annually in future, is the first major step towards bringing NUFAM even closer to the commercial vehicle industry and its transformation.

Now the next step follows. Six times a year, specialised journalist Marcus Walter and NUFAM project manager Florian Klag will talk to people from the industry about a wide range of topics in the commercial vehicle podcast. In 20 to 30 minutes, they talk about alternative drives, vehicle fleets, financing models and the people who keep the industry rolling.

NUFAM DAY 2024: Heated discussion on the lorry toll - watch the video to find out more

If lorries that transport goods are powered by electricity, it will be cheaper for hauliers. If, on the other hand, they drive with diesel engines, companies will have to pay extra thanks to the new lorry toll. The aim is to encourage providers to switch to alternative drive types.

So far, so good!

In the commercial vehicle industry, however, the toll met with some fierce resistance even before it came into force - for various reasons. The necessary infrastructure for e-trucks was lacking, applications for subsidies were far too complicated, and the toll was damaging the German economy - to name just a few.

At the second NUFAM DAY at the Karlsruhe Trade Fair Centre, experts therefore discussed the topic that is currently of greatest concern to the commercial vehicle industry. The question was: lorry tolls - successful climate policy or a tax increase through the back door?

Britta Wirtz, Managing Director of Messe Karlsruhe, Jochen Bortfeld, Project Manager at NUFAM, and Matthias Jundt, PR Manager at NUFAM, opened the discussion.

The talk was moderated by journalist and industry expert Marcus Walter. His discussion partners were Tobias Lang (Managing Director of the Verband des Verkehrsgewerbes Baden e.V. (partner association of the Bundesverband Güterkraftverkehr Logistik und Entsorgung), Florian Hacker (Deputy Head of Resources & Mobility at the Öko-Institut e.V.), Rainer Schmitt (Managing Director of Walter Schmitt GmbH) and Dr Patrick Plötz (Head of the Energy Economics business unit at Fraunhofer ISI).

The discussion

Lang said: "There are EU requirements that we have implemented. But we have done much more than we had to do. The fact is: the toll is a massive additional burden. We can call it a tax increase. Someone has to pay the more than seven billion we are talking about."

Freight forwarder Schmitt made it clear: "We at Spedition Schmitt are pioneers in e-mobility. Nevertheless, the toll burden is also immense for us. And this additional burden falls on a very weak industry. I therefore appeal to politicians: please use the toll for the road infrastructure as well and not just for the railways."

Plötz said: "Good policy does not consist of just one measure. And the political mix is not yet ideal. The timing of the toll can be debated. I can only say to all logistics companies and hauliers: enter the market for electrically powered lorries in good time."

Hacker added: "The toll is de facto an increase. I was surprised that the federal government managed to pull this off. Comparatively little is happening in the car sector. Shifting transport to rail is currently not attractive enough. At the moment, companies do not yet have the option of using alternative drive systems to cushion the costs of the toll."

The entire 90-minute discussion can be viewed on the NUFAM website and on the commercial vehicle trade fair's YouTube channel. The video of the first NUFAM DAY can also be found there, in which it was discussed which alternative drive type will be the one of the future.

Following the discussion on 20 June, interested parties took the opportunity to view and discuss the latest technology from the commercial vehicle industry at an exhibition while enjoying food and drinks. Among the exhibiting companies were S&G Automobil AG, IVECO Süd-West Nutzfahrzeuge GmbH, TYN-e GmbH, Webfleet, Recycling Activ & Tiefbau Live, Das Verkehrsministerium Baden-Württemberg, EBB Truck-Center GmbH DAF Truck Dealer, Tiropatrans Vertriebs GmbH, Martin Knirsch Kraftfahrzeuge GmbH, Weick Consulting GmbH, SATLOG GmbH, Bernard Krone GmbH and Karl Müller GmbH und Co KG.

Innovation, pilot project and champions: These are the exhibits

NUFAM DAY is a mixture of talks on current topics in the commercial vehicle industry combined with an exhibition showcasing the latest technology. Eleven companies are exhibiting at NUFAM DAY 2024 - and this is who they are.

eActros 600

S&G Automobil AG is bringing along the brand new eActros 600. The battery-electric long-distance lorry celebrated its world premiere a few months ago. It will go into production from December 2024, is expected to achieve CO2 savings of more than 80 per cent compared to Disel trucks over its entire life cycle and will be on display at NUFAM DAY.

According to the manufacturer, its technical data is a range of 500 kilometres without intermediate charging. With intermediate charging, it should be possible to cover significantly more than 1000 kilometres during the legally prescribed driver breaks. The eActros 600 has a combined gross combination weight of up to 44 tonnes and a payload of around 22 tonnes with a standard trailer.

IVECO S-eWay and eDaily

IVECO Süd-West Nutzfahrzeuge GmbH is bringing two vehicles to NUFAM DAY - the first electric S-eWay truck manufactured entirely by IVECO and the optimised eDaily electric transporter.

According to IVECO, the S-eWay has a range of up to 500 kilometres hub-to-hub or hub-to-city use - without recharging. The vehicle is powered by a battery system consisting of nine 82-kilowatt-hour batteries with a total capacity of 738 kilowatt hours. With a fast-charging capacity of up to 350 kilowatt hours, the S-eWay can charge 80 per cent of the battery within 90 minutes.

According to the manufacturer, the eDaily has a range of up to 400 kilometres in real city traffic. The latest version of the vehicle - the 72C chassis models with a gross vehicle weight of 7.2 tonnes and a wheelbase of 5100 millimetres - is now available with a fourth battery.

TYN-e TX-7

The Württemberg-based automotive manufacturer TYN-e produces lightweight electric vans. The company is bringing a vehicle to NUFAM DAY - which can be delivered with either a flatbed or a box body. The TX-7 has a length of 3.49 metres, a width of 1.47 metres and a height of 1.69 metres. The load compartment volume is specified as 2.3 cubic metres. The rear axle is powered by a 15 kW motor and, according to the manufacturer, one battery charge is sufficient for 120 kilometres.

25 years of Webfleet

Webfleet will also be exhibiting at NUFAM DAY. Launched as one of the first web-based fleet management solutions, the company claims to have more than 60,000 customers today. Wolfgang Schmid, Webfleet Head of Central Region at Bridgestone Mobility Solutions, says: "Looking back, fleet management has changed fundamentally in recent years. In the beginning, fleet companies focussed purely on tracking and tracing vehicles. Now comes the next stage: networked data. Fleet management systems are becoming smarter and smarter. They connect vehicles, drivers and control centres, collect new data and combine this data in completely new ways. This allows fleet and transport performance to be improved or made more efficient. This is already being successfully implemented in practice."

Recycling and civil engineering

The Reycling Activ & Tiefbau Live (RATL) trade fair will also be taking place on 20 June. The ZE19 will be an eye-catcher. The Zero-Emission-Contruction-Machinery excavator (ZECOM) belongs to the crawler excavator category and has battery-powered electric drive trains. Due to its zero emissions and low noise levels, it is ideal for use in enclosed spaces and residential areas. The ZE19 can also excel in areas where the operation of combustion engines is restricted.

Pilot project

The Baden-Württemberg Ministry of Transport will be providing information about the eWayBW pilot project as part of the exhibition. According to the Ministry, a unique technology comparison is being carried out as part of this project. As part of this, a purely battery-electric truck (BEV truck) from Daimler Truck AG will be used in the plant logistics of the local paper manufacturers involved alongside the Scania overhead line trucks. At the same time, HVO diesel reFuel is being tested under real-life conditions. The comparison is completed by a next-generation overhead line plug-in hybrid truck (O-PHEV) with a larger battery pack. Thanks to its larger traction battery, purely electric journeys are possible over the entire pilot route, according to the ministry. In the best-case scenario, the traction battery will be charged exclusively via the overhead line during the journey. The aim is to further utilise and evaluate the possibilities of dynamic charging, as the eHighway technology is known.

The trial envisages that all drive types will be used in parallel under identical boundary conditions within the eWayBW plant logistics. The data will be analysed by the accompanying scientific research.

Efficiency Champions

EBB Truck-Center GmbH is one of the leading DAF Truck Dealers. The company is bringing a real champion to NUFAM DAY - an Efficiency Champion. Each truck in this range will be equipped with a comprehensive range of fuel-saving features as standard, including the DAF Digital Vision system (cameras instead of mirrors) and a fully aerodynamic package with spoilers, fairings, fenders and a special base plate with an air duct designed for optimum efficiency. The Efficiency Champion also features low rolling resistance tyres, Predictive Cruise Control as standard and the powerful PACCAR MX engine brake.

Together with its extremely low weight and advanced on-board systems, such as adaptive cruise control, new engine software, the most favourable toll rates, HVO and ultra-modern ADAS systems, the Efficiency Champion sets new standards in transport efficiency and lowest total cost of ownership.

Truck of the Year 2024

Tiropatrans Vertriebs GmbH's appearance at NUFAM DAY is based on the motto ZERO EMISSIONS. Accordingly, Tiropatrans is bringing along the Volvo FH Electric. The truck was voted Truck of the Year 2024 - the first electric lorry to ever receive this award. Tiropatrans will also be represented at NUFAM 2025.

SUPER

Martin Knirsch Kraftfahrzeug GmbH is bringing the SCANIA SUPER to NUFAM DAY. According to the manufacturer, this has the latest 13-litre diesel engine, which saves eight percent fuel. Equipped with the "Smart Dash", visitors to the NUFAM DAY can test the new digital dashboard live. This is designed to allow drivers to interact effortlessly and intuitively with their vehicle. Thanks to the additional integration of "My Scanie" and the "Scania Driver App", the vehicle, the driver and the fleet manager are always up to date with the just-in-time system.

Support programmes

At NUFAM DAY, Weick Consulting GmbH will provide an overview of the current subsidy programmes for companies. Who can still apply for and access funding, where and how much? These questions are of great importance for companies, especially in times of change towards drives with renewables.

Toll reduction

At NUFAM DAY 2024, SATLOG will be showcasing its route optimisation with a new plug & play function to make toll costs transparent. "The aim was for customers to be able to upload their delivery data such as address and transport quantity, for example in roll containers, to the system very easily via Excel/CSV, press a button and then find out how they can deploy their vehicles independently of framework tours in such a way that as few kilometres as possible are driven. The toll difference between the planned and optimised tour is calculated before the tour," says Dr Jürgen Stausberg, Managing Director of SATLOG GmbH.

Exhibiting companies

A total of 13 companies and authorities will be exhibiting at NUFAM DAY - in addition to those already mentioned, they include Fahrzeugwerk Bernard Krone GmbH & Co. KG and Müller-Mitteltal.

Discussion on the lorry toll

Before the vehicles can be inspected, experts at the second NUFAM DAY will discuss the question: lorry toll - successful climate policy or tax increase through the back door?

The talk was moderated by journalist and industry expert Marcus Walter. His discussion partners were Tobias Lang (Managing Director of the Verband des Verkehrsgewerbes Baden e.V. (partner association of the Bundesverband Güterkraftverkehr Logistik und Entsorgung)), Florian Hacker (Deputy Head of Resources & Mobility at the Öko-Institut e.V.), Rainer Schmitt (Managing Director of Walter Schmitt GmbH) and Dr Patrick Plötz (Head of the Energy Economics business unit at Fraunhofer ISI).

The entire 90-minute discussion can be viewed on the NUFAM website and on the commercial vehicle trade fair's YouTube channel. The video of the first NUFAM DAY can also be found there, where the discussion centred on which alternative drive type will be the future.

NUFAM DAY 2024: Truck toll - successful climate policy or tax increase through the back door?

The truck toll on federal highways was introduced in 2005. This initiated a system change from tax-based to user-based financing. After several extensions, the toll was changed on December 1, 2023 so that CO2 emissions now play a decisive role. In short: if you emit more CO2, you pay more toll - and vice versa. According to the German government, this is intended to create an incentive to "use low-emission vehicles efficiently".

However, many hauliers criticized the extended toll after it was announced. Associations that want to strengthen rail freight transport, on the other hand, welcomed the toll. At the second NUFAM DAY, experts will discuss this toll and the question of whether it represents a successful climate policy or whether it is merely a tax increase through the back door.

The panel will be moderated by Marcus Walter. The long-standing trade journalist already successfully hosted the first NUFAM DAY last year. His discussion partners are:

- Tobias Lang, Managing Director of Verband des Verkehrsgewerbes Baden e.V. (partner association of the Bundesverband Güterkraftverkehr Logistik und Entsorgung),

- Florian Hacker from the Öko-Institut,

- Rainer Schmitt, freight forwarder and

- Dr Patrick Plötz, Head of the Energy Economics Business Unit at Fraunhofer ISI.

There will also be a welcome address by Daniela Kluckert, State Secretary at the Federal Ministry of Transport and Digital Infrastructure.

The discussion will take place on 20 June at Messe Karlsruhe. The event starts at 10 a.m., begins with a welcome address by Daniela Kluckert, Parliamentary State Secretary to the Federal Minister for Digital and Transport Affairs, and lasts around 90 minutes.

Exhibition with renowned providers

Following the discussion, there will be an exhibition for further discussion and networking. The exhibiting companies and associations include the Ministry of Transport Baden-Württemberg, S&G Automobil AG, Martin Knirsch Kraftfahrzeuge GmbH, TYN-e GmbH, EBB Truck-Center GmbH DAF Truck Dealer, Tiropatrans Vertriebs GmbH, Webfleet Solutions Sales B.V., Iveco Süd-West Nutzfahrzeuge GmbH and Weick Consulting GmbH.

Anyone wishing to take part in the free event can register HERE.

The discussion will also be broadcast live - on the NUFAM website and on the commercial vehicle trade fair's YouTube channel.

NUFAM 2023 ended on Sunday with the traditional horn blowing. Behind the more than 400 exhibitors from 23 nations lie four interesting, innovative and above all successful trade fair days. In its eighth edition, NUFAM has further established itself as an important platform for the commercial vehicle industry in the heart of Europe. A total of around 24,000 visitors found their way to NUFAM.

"Messe Karlsruhe, as the organiser of NUFAM, once again created the showcase for concentrated innovative power and sustainable as well as future-oriented technologies for the commercial vehicle industry. Over the past four days, NUFAM has thus underlined how valuable and indispensable it is for the transformation of the industry. It has further established itself as an investment and networking platform in the TechnologieRegion Karlsruhe." With these words, Britta Wirtz, Managing Director of Messe Karlsruhe, sums up the commercial vehicle trade fair in Karlsruhe.

Innovations and sustainability in focus

Never before have so many premieres been shown as at this year's NUFAM. The exhibitors deliberately chose the commercial vehicle fair as a platform for their new presentations. In particular, they presented vehicle and product innovations in the areas of alternative drives, digitalisation and sustainability. Jürgen Pauli, Sales Manager at S&G, confirms this: "NUFAM is a really great opportunity to present new vehicles. It is now a very well-established trade fair far beyond the country. We show the vehicles and innovations here that customers explicitly want to look at." Volker Mai, Sales Manager at Pneuhage, has a similar view: "For us, NUFAM is the optimal platform where we can excellently present our innovations such as our new fleet system or new tyres."

NUFAM valued as an investment platform

Around three quarters of the trade fair visitors rated the event as important for their investment decisions.

Jürgen Singhof, Rupp Landhandel from Alzey, confirms this: "At NUFAM I want to gather information, get an overview and see what is currently up to date. I enquire here about products for future investments. I am a regular visitor to this fair and, as always, I like it here very much. The exhibitors appreciate NUFAM as a platform for offers: "We exhibit at NUFAM because we meet decision-makers here and can get a good overview. We are represented here at the fair with a total of 20 exhibits - not only on our stand, but also on those of our partners," says Daniel Böhmer, Managing Director of FX Meiller. Sascha Ziehl, Managing Director of Tiropatrans, adds: "NUFAM is an absolute trade fair. Many visitors who are interested in commercial vehicles and digitalisation come here."

The specialist forums Telematics&Digital Services and Charging Infrastructure were always well attended.

Selection of topics always close to the industry

The focus of NUFAM was on alternative drives. With the newly created forum on charging infrastructure, the topic was extensively illuminated. The Saturday of the trade fair was dominated by electric drives, hydrogen engines and research into synthetic fuels, as well as how to deal with funding programmes.

The nine expert presentations, moderated by Marcus Walter, were very well received by the trade audience. He sums up: "The new forum really hit the spot. There was plenty of time to discuss the questions with the experts."

More exhibiting nations, guests from Germany and Europe

NUFAM 2023 was more international than ever before. With 23 nations represented, companies from more countries than ever before were represented at the Karlsruhe commercial vehicle trade fair. "We aim to acquire new customers and orders with our presence at NUFAM. We are a large international company with headquarters in Poland and have grown strongly in the last five to ten years. Now we are increasingly active in the largest commercial vehicle market in Europe - which is Germany - and want to grow here as well," says Martin Kemker, Sales Manager at Wielton.

About one sixth of all NUFAM guests travelled more than 300 kilometres to the fair. Overall, 80 percent of the fair's guests were trade visitors. There was an even higher concentration of trade visitors on weekdays, combined with an equally higher travel distance. The guests travelled to Karlsruhe from fourteen European countries - for example from France, Italy, the Netherlands or Denmark.

The date for the ninth NUFAM in two years' time has been set.

Top values for satisfaction

In terms of visitor satisfaction, NUFAM achieved an absolute top score of almost 95 percent among the top 3. The recommendation value is around 92 percent. "I am visiting NUFAM for the first time this year and I am impressed by the size and the variety of offers. The fair is much more expansive than I initially thought, which is why I'm staying an extra day in Karlsruhe to see all the exhibitors' products," says Alex Savkin, Schlundt Transport.

For Jochen Bortfeld, NUFAM project manager, the eighth edition of the commercial vehicle fair was once again a complete success: "We are always close to the industry and know what the market needs. This concept is convincing and is reflected in the satisfaction of our exhibitors. I am already looking forward to the next edition.

Exhibitors have already confirmed for 2025

Beate Frères, Head of the Own Exhibitions Division at Messe Karlsruhe, draws a positive conclusion: "NUFAM 2023 was a complete success. This is only possible thanks to the intensive cooperation with our exhibitors. They have shown enormous commitment and used the entire range of instruments of the trade fair with numerous press events of their own and the entire marketing keyboard. Added to this are the excellent stand presentations. And I am pleased that many have already given their commitment for the coming commercial vehicle fair in two years."

Kögel will also be back at the start of the next edition of the fair, as Division Manager Marketing Maximilian Franz says: "We have always enjoyed exhibiting here and will continue to do so in the future. The quality of the trade visitors is special. That's something you don't get at other fairs." The next NUFAM will take place from 25 to 28 September 2025.

“With exhibitors from 23 nations, our commercial vehicle trade fair is more international than ever before. Over the four days of the trade fair, there will also be more new products in the field of alternative drive systems on display than ever before” - with these words, Britta Wirtz opened NUFAM - The Commercial Vehicle Trade Fair in Karlsruhe on Thursday, September 21. Until Sunday, September 24, more than 400 exhibiting manufacturers and dealers will be showcasing current and future products from the commercial vehicle industry.

The Managing Director of Messe Karlsruhe made it clear that NUFAM's mission is to provide the commercial vehicle industry, which is undergoing unprecedented change, with the perfect framework for the transformation towards alternative drive systems. In his welcoming address, Karlsruhe's Lord Mayor Dr. Frank Mentrup also underlined the importance of NUFAM for Karlsruhe, but also for the entire Karlsruhe technology region.

The discussion panel (from left to right): Moderator Günther Grünig, State Secretary Elke Zimmer, Prof. MArtin Wietschel (Fraunhofer ISI), Rainer Schmitt (Walter Schmitt GmbH), Jörg Hömberg (Air Products), Mario Männlein (IVECO Magirus) and Dr. Stephan Melchert (ZF Group).

Top-class opening talk

The opening talk on “Climate-neutral transportation on the road - from overhead lines to fuel cells and charging infrastructure” was even more exciting. Representatives from politics, science and business took to the stage. Elke Zimmer (State Secretary in the Baden-Württemberg Ministry of Transport), Prof. Martin Wietschel (Head of the Competence Center Energy Technologies and Energy Systems at Fraunhofer ISI), Rainer Schmitt (Managing Director of Walter Schmitt GmbH), Jörg Hömberg (Managing Director of Air Products), Mario Männlein (Head of Alternative Propulsions at IVECO Magirus) and Dr. Stephan Melchert (Manager Product and Marketing eTrailer ZF Group) took part in the discussion.

Trade fair managing director Britta Wirtz (left), State Secretary Elke Zimmer and NUFAM project manager Jochen Bortfeld.

State Secretary Elke Zimmer represented the State Ministry of Transport, which is the joint patron of NUFAM together with the Federal Ministry for Digital and Transport Affairs. In her opening statement, she said: “We will only be able to solve the tasks facing us by working together.” We need to be clear about what we want and what it will take to move forward. The state of Baden-Württemberg wants to be climate-neutral by 2040. Savings must therefore be made in freight transport by 2030. “It is therefore incredible that we have trade fairs like NUFAM to see what the current state of the industry is,” Zimmer continued.

The first visitors will enter the action hall at the Karlsruhe Trade Fair Center after it opens at 10 a.m. on September 21.

When e-trucks pick up speed

Rainer Schmitt from Walter Schmitt Transportlogististiker mainly drives in the region and between Mannheim and Offenburg. This distance can easily be covered by alternative means. The majority of transportation in the region could be electrified. The company has been increasingly focusing on e-mobility for four years. Schmitt: “The topic will really pick up speed from 2025. Then we can leave the lighthouse stage. Doubling the toll will also help.”

During the discussion, Rainer Schmitt also criticized politicians: “I have the impression that politicians are shying away from dealing with the harsh reality.” They could generally be much faster in electrifying their own fleets, but there is a lack of charging infrastructure. This is a “complete disaster”. Schmitt called filling out the funding applications “nonsense”.

Jörg Hömberg from Air Products also discussed this on stage: “We are the largest hydrogen supplier in the world. We see the technical possibilities, but we need political support.”

The exciting discussion officially opened NUFAM 2023.

Politics must create the right conditions

Mario Männlein is responsible for alternative drives at IVECO. The company is the only manufacturer to be active in all areas: “Our credo is to think in terms of technologies, not ideologies. Fortunately, physics is the same for everyone.” Politicians must create the same conditions for everyone.

Stephan Melchert from the ZF Group in Friedrichshafen said to State Secretary Zimmer: “The field is set. Please support us so that we can get the vehicles up and running quickly.” The ZF Group is presenting a world first at NUFAM with a new version of the electrified semi-trailer. This saves up to 16 percent fuel and CO2.

„Sleepless nights“

The panelists agreed that more efforts are needed to make progress in the field of alternative drives. The only challenge is how to get there. Professor Wietschel summed up at the end of the talk: “Openness to technology is good. But at some point we have to make investment decisions. I am also a little frustrated to some extent. What do we have to do, what level of acceptance is there? That sometimes gives me sleepless nights.”

Federal Minister of Transport Dr. Volker Wissing sent a greeting as patron.

Greetings from Volker Wissing

Dr. Volker Wissing wants to prevent this. The Federal Minister of Transport and Digital Affairs, who is also the patron of NUFAM, said in his welcoming address: “From alternative drive systems and renewable fuels to digitalization: the commercial vehicle industry is on the move and is working at full speed on innovative technologies for more progress and climate protection. NUFAM puts them in the spotlight, showcasing impressive approaches and solutions. This is inspiring and motivates people to follow suit. That's why I was happy to take on the patronage of NUFAM.”

Palfinger from Ainring: E-truck with building materials crane

The tour continues on the open-air site. In addition to numerous exhibitors, there is also a demo park. This is where companies present their products live in action. On the weekend, there will be a varied program consisting of the rescue chain, the drift show, the NUFAM Challenge and other highlights.

Palfinger from Ainring in Bavaria will also be represented there. Palfinger specializes in tippers, work platforms, loader cranes and more. What can visitors to NUFAM 2023 expect at the traditionally very busy stand? “We are bringing our entire range with us. This includes loader cranes, timber cranes, truck-mounted forklifts, a tail lift, hooklifts and work platforms,” says Simon Endlicher, Marketing Specialist Cranes. Traditionally, Palfinger offers exciting live shows at NUFAM. This year, the focus will be on the company's new flagship. The new crane shines with many new assistance and comfort functions.

The commercial vehicle industry is in full transformation mode, with alternative drive systems taking center stage. To what extent does this change also affect Palfinger?

Endlicher: “We have an electric truck with a building materials crane. This is aimed at the last mile and the fine distribution of building materials. With this, users are independent of time and place and can make deliveries at night, for example, because the noise pollution is so low.”

The Central Association for Bodywork and Vehicle Technology is located in Hall 2.

Zentralverband Karossiere- und Fahrzeugtechnik from Friedberg (ZKF): Current challenges in the industry

Back under the roof in Hall 2, the virtual tour heads for the Central Association for Bodywork and Vehicle Technology in Friedberg (ZKF). Dierk Conrad, Head of Division and Managing Director Commercial Vehicles at the ZFK, explains the tasks of the association.

“As a professional and trade association for the bodywork and vehicle construction industry, the Central Association for Bodywork and Vehicle Technology, with around 3,200 member companies nationwide, is a strong association for asserting the interests of its members locally at national and EU level. Almost 500 member companies are active as manufacturers of bodies, trailers and special vehicles or focus on the repair of commercial vehicles. The bodies are based on vans from the truck industry as well as heavy-duty trucks of all classes. Customers of the conversions and superstructures are, for example, haulage companies, companies with their own vehicle fleet, craft businesses, local authorities or even disaster relief organizations such as the fire department, THW and the German Armed Forces. Without our members, the baker would not receive any raw materials and would not be able to deliver bread to the bakery branch. The fire department would be just as unable to carry out missions as the ambulance would be to transport accident victims to hospital. The particular strength of many member companies lies in the production of customized transport solutions and special products that are not offered by the industry,” says Conrad.

What is currently on the minds of the members of the central association and where is the shoe pinching? Conrad: “In many cases, our companies are still struggling with the consequences of the coronavirus crisis and the war in Ukraine, because the truck industry has only supplied chassis to the body manufacturers to a limited extent or with very long delivery times due to the disruptions in the supply chains and short-time working in the plants. Another issue is the high inventories of materials and unfinished products resulting from the delivery delays. The resulting additional costs - as well as the increased material and energy costs - can hardly be passed on in current contracts. Particularly in the case of public contracts, the legislator is called upon to adapt procurement law and introduce price escalation clauses for long-term delivery services in order to be able to receive offers at all in the future. There are already some companies that no longer take part in public tenders due to the general conditions. Although the transformation in drive technology is an operational and organizational challenge, it does not represent an obstacle for companies. It is more difficult to deal with the legal framework conditions that companies working in the trade have to contend with. New EU directives and laws on vehicle registration are being passed at ever shorter intervals, making the scope for individual superstructures ever narrower. Together with the rapidly growing regulatory and bureaucratic requirements, the workload for a medium-sized trade business is becoming increasingly challenging and costly. The shortage of skilled workers is also a burning issue in our industry. It is no exaggeration to say that almost every member company is looking for staff and that many training positions could not be filled this year either. Vocational training is a central task of a professional association, which is why we support member companies with a training campaign to recruit new trainees, for example.”

NUFAM is also an important meeting place for the municipal vehicle sector. What is the situation there regarding the switch from diesel to alternative drive systems? “The switch depends entirely on the application and the availability of basic vehicles. One of our exhibitors at the ZKF joint stand, for example, wanted to exhibit 2 vehicles with electric drive in the weight class up to 7.5 tons, but unfortunately there were delays in the delivery of the basic vehicles. Our member companies report that there is interest in principle from local authorities, but without federal funding programs, municipal companies often find it difficult or impossible to cover the additional costs for the alternative drive.

In the van segment, many OEMs currently mainly offer panel vans and fewer chassis with electric drive. Chassis are needed for municipal applications in particular in order to complete them with different bodies,” concludes the head of department and managing director.

Knoblauch is located in hall 3.

Knoblauch GmbH from Immendingen: Expedition mobile, 24-meter-ton crane, all-terrain Unimog

From Hall 2, we move to Hall 3, where Knoblauch GmbH from Immendingen is waiting, among others. Sales Manager Municipal Technology Niels Möller introduces his company: “Since 1951 and in the third generation, our company has been proud to be the general agency for Unimog. We have established ourselves as a trustworthy partner for Unimog and municipal technology. Our sales territory extends from Rhineland-Palatinate and Baden-Württemberg to Kempten in the Allgäu region.”

What can NUFAM visitors look forward to with regard to the popular Unimog? Möller: “We will be on site with a wide variety of vehicles for both commercial and municipal customers and have three highlights in our luggage: an expedition mobile, a Unimog with a 24-meter-tonne crane and a high-terrain Unimog. The expedition vehicle is specially designed for adventurous trips and expeditions. It is extremely suitable for off-road use and can even be used in remote areas. With its reinforced body, all-wheel drive and increased ground clearance, the expedition vehicle masters challenging off-road routes without any problems.

The Unimog with the 27-meter crane enables crane work even in the most difficult terrain. As the name suggests, no destination is out of reach with the all-terrain Unimog.”

F&B has its stand in the dm-Arena. The hydrogen Unimog is located in the outdoor area right next to the stand.

F&B Nutzfahrzeug-Technik from Hagenbach: Hydrogen-powered Unimog

F&B Nutzfahrzeug-Technik from Hagenbach will also be exhibiting Unimogs. The company is located in the dm-Arena during NUFAM. Patrick Spitznagel and Info Bertsche from the management will be there.

F&B is one of the leading vehicle conversion companies in Germany. What exactly does the company convert? “We convert trucks and vans - of all sizes. Our focus is on Mercedes and Daimler truck products,” explains Spitznagel.

One special project is the conversion of a Unimog to hydrogen drive. How exactly does it work? What are the challenges involved? Spitznagel: “The conversion of the Unimog is our core business. The actual development work came from Daimler The colleagues carried out the conversion from gas to hydrogen engine. The challenge for us was to adapt the engine, make the modifications to the standard Unimog, rewire everything and install the sensor technology. This took around four weeks in total.

All well-known manufacturers and dealer of the industry will be present. They show vehicles of all weight classes, superstructures and trailers, tyres, parts, accessories, workshop equipment, telematics solutions and services. NUFAM is characterized by being compact yet comprehensive, manageable and at the same time diverse. It brings decision-makers together, impresses with its short distances and thus offers the ideal framework conditions for making current and future investment decisions.

Jochen Bortfeld, Project Manager at NUFAM, adds: “We are very pleased with the range of more than 800 vehicles, from transporters to semi-trailers, and shows that NUFAM has further consolidated its position in the exhibitors’ calendar.”

Elke Zimmer, State Secretary in the Ministry of Transport of the State of Baden-Württemberg, will attend this year's NUFAM as she did in 2021. This year she is taking part in the opening talk. (Picture: Jürgen Rösner)

Opening event

As part of the NUFAM opening on 21 September at 11 a.m., Elke Zimmer (State Secretary in the Ministry of Transport Baden-Württemberg), Prof. Martin Wietschel (Head of the Competence Center Energy Technologies and Energy Systems at Frauenhofer ISI), Rainer Schmitt (Managing Director Walter Schmitt GmbH), Jörg Hömburg (Managing Director Air Products), Mario Männlein (Head of Alternative Propulsions at IVECO Magirus) and Dr. Stephan Melchert (Manager Product and Marketing eTrailer ZF Group) will discuss the “Climate-neutral road transport – from overhead lines to fuel cells to charging infrastructure”.

State Secretary Elke Zimmer says: “The various drive technologies, such as the battery, the fuel cell (hydrogen) and the overhead line, as well as the pure refueling with synthetic fuels produced with renewable energies, must prove themselves in practice. Here, it will become clear which technology excels in terms of functionality, safety, robustness, cost-effectiveness and attractiveness. At the moment, battery-electric models are becoming the driving force not only in passenger cars but also in the field of truck traffic. also means that we now need to quickly create the framework conditions to create the right charging infrastructure for these vehicles.”

Federal and State Ministry of Transport with patronage

The importance of NUFAM is underscored by the patronage of the Federal Minister for Transport and Digital Affairs, Dr. Volker Wissing: “From alternative powertrains and renewable fuels to digitalization: The commercial vehicle industry is on the move and is working hard on innovative technologies for more progress and climate protection. NUFAM puts them in the spotlight, shows impressive approaches and solutions. That is why I was pleased to take over the patronage of NUFAM.”

Winfried Hermann, Minister of Transport of the State of Baden-Württemberg, is also the patron of NUFAM 2023. Beate Frères, Head of the Own Exhibitions Business Unit at Messe Karlsruhe, says: “We are very pleased that two ministries – the Federal Ministry of Digital Affairs and Transport and the Ministry of Transport Baden-Württemberg – evaluate NUFAM as an important platform for the mobility turnaround in the commercial vehicle industry and support it accordingly. The question of alternative drives and climate-neutral transport are the topics of the future. At NUFAM, we will create the ideal framework for this and give the industry the space it needs for its networking.”

NUFAM impresses as an information plate. The specialist forums are a cornerstone. This year, the Charging Infrastructure Forum was re-created (Photo: Jürgen Rösner)

Proven and newly created expert forum

NUFAM is a leading trade fair for the commercial vehicle industry and will continue to impress as a valuable information platform in 2023. The tried-and-tested Telematics Forum was supplemented by the areas of Digital Services. On Thursday and Friday, 18 speakers from business, law and science will present knowledge, research results and, above all, solutions for telematics and digital aid systems in ten-minute short presentations between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. The Forum will also discuss Artificial Intelligence and how it can help transport logistics.

Interested parties can visit a completely new forum on the Saturday of the fair. In the Charging Infrastructure Forum everything revolves around alternative drives of the future and how these can become reality. Nine short lectures will focus on battery-electric drives, hydrogen and e-fuels. The Forum provides guidance on what kind of alternative drives should be invested in. Both forums are moderated by journalist and industry expert Marcus Walter, who had already led the Media Day.

During NUFAM, the Truck Driver Forum is about everything that concerns truck drivers. The focus is on cargo safety and the general safety and health of the truckers (Photo: Jürgen Rösner)

From Demo Park to Truck Driver Forum

NUFAM combines transport, forwarding and logistics under one roof. Those who make investment decisions are on the ground. Today, however, these decisions are also significantly influenced by those who operate commercial vehicles on a daily basis – professional drivers.

NUFAM also offers a comprehensive programme for these. On Sunday, 24 September, the Truck Driver Forum, moderated by commercial vehicle journalist Thomas Rosenberger, will discuss everything that concerns truck drivers. The focus is on road safety. Experts will discuss the causes and consequences of accidents and how they can be minimised and combated in three panels. These include rear-end collisions on motorways or collisions with cyclists when turning right in cities.

Cargo safety in focus

On Saturday, September 23rd, it will be about cargo security. The Königsberger Load Security Circle offers four lectures from 10.30 a.m. to 4.15 p.m. entitled “Wrong load distribution and its possible consequences”. Other topics of the Truck Driver Forum are “Living healthy on the road”, “Against dying at the end of a traffic jam”, “Wake up at 80 km/h” or “Getting under the wheels. Why there are only losers when turning right”.

In addition, truck drivers can practice in the Dekra truck simulator how to react in hot and dangerous situations in order to prevent worse. The NUFAM Demo Park also shows the full range of commercial vehicles, and the rescue chain shows how they work together in exceptional cases. The King or Queen of Travellers is determined as part of the NUFAM Challenge.

Offers for municipalities

Traditionally, manufacturers also show vehicles for the municipal sector at NUFAM. On the Thursday of the fair, two free guided tours will take place at the "Treffpunkt Kommunal" (Municipal Meeting Point) - from 10.30 am to 12.30 pm and from 1.30 pm to 3.30 pm. Suppliers of municipal vehicles, bodies and attachments will present current solutions for municipalities under expert moderation. During the entire duration of the fair, the two Municipal Miles between the halls are the perfect contact point for all visitors with an interest in municipal vehicles.

From Demopark and Rescue Chain to NUFAM Challenge and Truck Driver Forum

For the eighth time, NUFAM - the tradefair for commercial vehicles fair will take place in Karlsruhe from 21 to 24 September. NUFAM is a leading trade fair for the commercial vehicle industry and combines current technology with mobility concepts of the future. It is already clear that NUFAM 2023 will be the largest edition in its history. In addition to over 400 exhibitors and an exhibition area of 80,000 square metres, the commercial vehicle trade fair offers everything to do with commercial vehicles. In addition, NUFAM also impresses with numerous hands-on activities, lectures, information and more for professional drivers.

In the Truck Driver Forum, there are numerous lectures for truck drivers that are intended to affect people's everyday lives and make them easier. This picture is from the last NUFAM. (Picture: Jürgen Rösner)

Load securing and Truck Driver Forum

Everything that affects truck drivers is the subject of the main forum in the action hall. The concept of load securing, for example, will be the main topic on Saturday, 23 September. The Königsberger Ladungssicherungskreis (KLSK) will offer four lectures on the subject of "Incorrect load distribution and its possible consequences" from 10.30 am to 4.15 pm. The lectures are conducted as team teaching and last about 75 minutes each. The KLSK is a non-profit association with more than 350 members from Germany and Europe.

On Sunday, 24 September, commercial vehicle journalist Thomas Rosenberger will moderate the forum. The thematic focus will be on road safety. During the three discussion rounds in the Truck Driver Forum, experts will talk about the causes as well as the consequences of accidents and suggest how to combat their causes - be it rear-end collisions on the motorway or collisions with cyclists when turning right in cities.

"Healthy living on the road. Self-therapy is not the solution".

The health of drivers in particular plays an essential role in road safety. Poor nutrition, too little sleep and stress are the order of the day "on the road". But they damage health in the long term and can be the cause of road accidents. Many professional drivers still underestimate the consequences of illness and medical emergencies on the road. If something does happen on the road, there are often no possibilities to get medical care. The DocStop association is fighting to change this situation. Representatives of DocStop will discuss with professional drivers, entrepreneurs and experts from BG Verkehr, among others, the importance of health and how the poor situation on the road can be improved.

"Against dying at the end of traffic jams - effectively combating causes and using technology correctly".

Rear-end collisions at the end of traffic jams can in most cases be attributed to a momentary lapse of concentration on the part of the driver and in many cases end with fatal consequences for those involved. Distraction and microsleep, often triggered by stress, are almost exclusively responsible. Modern technology in trucks is supposed to help prevent accidents. But this is not always successful. Accident research is looking for answers and has just discovered a new phenomenon. In about six percent of all serious truck rear-end collisions on motorways, trucks collided with mobile warning signs indicating daytime road works. Some emergency brake assistance systems apparently only react to the truck in front of the advance warning trailer - and therefore do not brake in time. Now, a new type of communication system is supposed to warn drivers earlier.

The association "Hellwach mit 80 km/h" wants to draw attention to the dangers that await truck drivers at the end of traffic jams. (Picture: Jürgen Rösner)

"Wide awake at 80 km/h"

Dieter Schäfer knows enough about these accidents from his professional work as a motorway police officer. With the prevention association Hellwach mit 80 km/h e.V., he is committed to sharpening the danger radar of professional drivers. Professional drivers and transport companies as well as representatives of the truck industry and the motorway operating company discuss with him in order to find solutions.

The initiative "Hellwach mit 80 km/h" (Wide awake at 80 km/h) was founded in 2019 and has since been drawing attention to the problems and challenges in the stressful everyday working life of drivers. According to the association that emerged from the initiative, in more than 80 per cent of cases the use of a smartphone is responsible for a rear-end collision involving truck drivers at the end of a traffic jam. Mannheim logistics companies and freight forwarders are fighting against these "deadly sins". According to the association, the focus of the presentation at NUFAM is the multilingual educational brochure with the ten Max Eighty Rules.

"This is our second time at NUFAM. We have a unique opportunity here to meet not only the drivers, but all the players involved in the supply chain, in order to convince them to work together to curb truck accidents at the end of traffic jams," says Dieter Schäfer, board member and spokesman for the "Hellwach mit 80 km/h" prevention association.

"Getting under the wheels. Why there are only losers when turning right".

Almost every road user has seen them: the white ghost bikes. They stand wherever a cyclist has been killed in a traffic accident and are intended to warn of the risk of accidents caused by trucks turning right at dangerous intersections. Although there are now turning assistants, these accidents happen again and again. The expert panel during NUFAM, together with technical experts, lawyers, professional drivers, emergency counsellors as well as representatives of prevention organisations and cyclists' representatives, will clarify causes and look for solutions. Because there are only losers in these tragic accidents: cyclists who are torn from their lives and professional drivers who often suffer from the consequences for the rest of their lives, can no longer practise their profession, are confronted with severe legal consequences and are exposed to psychological stress that can turn into depression and addiction if left untreated.

Dekra truck simulator

Drivers of trucks or emergency vehicles bear great responsibility for the safety of all those involved in road traffic. They must be able to control their vehicle even under difficult traffic, road or weather conditions. Yet they are often inadequately prepared. The reason: many critical situations cannot be trained in advance - neither in the vehicle nor on the road. One way of experiencing these situations in a safe environment and finding possible solutions is the DEKRA truck simulator. With the use of the innovative, versatile driving simulator and the "ProFahrT" qualification programme, the DEKRA Academy aims to close this "safety gap". The programme ensures high training success not least because it always focuses on the driver and his practice - and not on the vehicle. The simulator will be available for testing in the trade fair atrium for the entire duration of the event.

NUFAM Demo Park and Rescue Chain

The full range of commercial vehicles will be on display at the exhibitors' vehicle presentations in the NUFAM Demo Park. Well-known manufacturers present their latest vehicles in action and amaze the spectators. The rescue chain on Saturday will be exciting and informative. Here it will be shown how various partners work hand in hand in the event of a truck accident. The rescue chain has been a real crowd puller in the past and will continue to be so in the future. As a special highlight, Alex Gräff, one of Germany's best-known professional drifters, will show all his skills in the Demo Park and draw creative donuts on the asphalt with his racing car.

The roadside inspection service of the Federal Office for Logistics and Mobility (BALM) checks irregularities on trucks while they are on the road and no longer just when the vehicles are stationary. The ministry will be showing how this works at NUFAM. (Image: Federal Office for Logistics and Mobility)

Pilot project of the roadside inspection service

The Roadside Inspection Service (SKD) of the Federal Office for Logistics and Mobility (BALM) is designed to detect conspicuous features on heavy goods vehicles in order to curb dangers. As part of the pilot project "SKD-Digital", the use and interaction of various sensor systems and procedural software were investigated. The aim of these technologies is to detect conspicuous features as they pass. Until now, this was only possible when vehicles were examined while stationary. The aim of the project is also to reduce standing times of truck drivers.

At NUFAM, BALM will present two inspection vehicles. In addition, interested parties will have the opportunity to ask questions on the subject of inspections and to find out about the latest inspection technologies such as the "SKD-Digital" project.

Germany's best professional driver is being sought at the NUFAM Challenge. (Picture: Jürgen Rösner)

NUFAM Challenge

The "King or Queen of the Travellers" will be determined at the NUFAM Challenge. Starting in August, there will be preliminary questions on the NUFAM website that participants in the competition can answer. The best eight participants will then be invited to NUFAM at the Karlsruhe Trade Fair Centre and will compete against each other on the Saturday of the trade fair. The NUFAM Champion and thus the best professional driver in Germany will be determined there.

If you are a fan of trucks and like to have them in a smaller format in your living room, bedroom or anywhere else, you will find what you are looking for at the Truck Model Exchange. Small vehicles on a scale of 1:87 are sold in the action hall of the Karlsruhe trade fair.

What is the alternative drive of the future? Controversial discussion at the NUFAM Media Day
Jochen Bortfeld, Project Manager of NUFAM, and Britta Wirtz, Managing Director of Messe Karlsruhe, gave a preview of the commercial vehicle trade fair in September at the Media Day. (Pictures: Benedikt Spether/Messe Karlsruhe)

(From left) Moderator Marcus Walter in conversation with Christian Bodi, Dr Olaf Toedter, Kurt Sigl and Thomas Weidinger.

Outlook for NUFAM

The discussion was part of the first NUFAM Media Day. The aim of the new format was to provide information about NUFAM - The Commercial Vehicle Show from 21 to 24 September, but also to use the discussion to get closer to the practical experience of exhibitors from the commercial vehicle industry. Britta Wirtz, Managing Director of Messe Karlsruhe, gave a brief introduction to NUFAM and Karlsruhe as a mobility location. Jochen Bortfeld, Project Manager of NUFAM, first took a look at the upcoming NUFAM. "With 420 to 450 exhibitors, NUFAM will be the biggest in its history so far. Three months from today, we will meet here again," he told around 60 guests who had come to the sunny atrium of Messe Karlsruhe. After the introductory words, they followed a lively and controversial discussion on the question of the right alternative drive for the future. In a good 75 minutes, the discussants wrestled with solutions in a fair manner, but hard and controversial in terms of content.

Christian Bodi, Managing Director of Logistics at dm-drogerie markt, began by talking about two pilot projects. The drugstore group from Karlsruhe supplies shops in Bonn and Nuremberg with e-trucks and hydrogen trucks respectively: "We are experimenting! We want to test the technology with our partners under normal conditions," said Christian Bodi. It is a matter of starting, gathering experience, and then deciding how to proceed. The managing director of logistics emphasised that the costs of hydrogen trucks are still about two and a half times higher on average than those of diesel-powered trucks. Bodi emphasised that in the future it would be a matter of exploring the advantages and disadvantages of different alternative drives in practice. It is about working together constructively in the "very complex" search for alternative drive systems of the future. Companies must be clear about what is necessary from a social as well as a business point of view in order to ultimately act accordingly.

Kurt Sigl, President of the Federal Association of eMobility, emphasised that it was open to technology. There is no ideology involved: "What currently works the easiest is e-mobility. The president of the Bundesverband eMobilität went on to say: "If you wait for politics, you can wait forever." Kurt Sigl pointed out that other players from China or the USA were already fighting for dominance of the new market. A development time of eight to ten years no longer exists: "It's all about speed. We are no longer alone," Kurt Sigl made clear. Kurt Sigl could not answer the question of what the alternative drive of the future would be, but: "What we currently have is almost nothing.

After the discussion, the guests had the opportunity to look at exhibits in the atrium.

Dr. Olaf Toedter from KIT, on the other hand, is convinced that there will be a mix of different types of drive in the future: "The decisions are so complex that any simplification won't work." Companies would always have to look at the areas in which they are travelling and with which ranges. For short distances, the answer could be e-mobility, for longer distances synthetic fuels.

Thomas Weidinger, Head of Field Sales Germany at WEX, also took part in the discussion. WEX offers fuel cards with Esso and other providers and is an exhibitor at NUFAM in September. An important part of WEX’s mission is the integration of alternative fuels in the future. “We focus on the needs of our customers who are keen to expedite their energy transition.” WEX is ready to accompany them on their journeys to alternative fuels. "While the classic diesel is still a part of many fleets, companies are looking for fuel card providers such as WEX to help them make the transition.“

NUFAM Media Day:

NUFAM has been one of Germany's leading commercial vehicle trade fairs for years. This year it is even the only purely commercial vehicle trade fair in the country - and is heading for its biggest edition ever. With around 450 exhibitors, NUFAM presents more expertise than ever before.

A foretaste of the event, which will be held from 21 to 24 September, will be given on 22 June. That's when NUFAM's Media Day will take place.

The Media Day is the press event in the run-up to NUFAM 2023. The focus of the event will be a talk on stage, where the following question will be discussed: "What alternative type of drive will fleet managers and manufacturers have to adapt to in the future?"

The talk will be moderated by Marcus Walter. Before becoming a freelance trade journalist 17 years ago, he was editor-in-chief of Transport and Logistra at Huss-Verlag for a long time. Walter is a proven expert in the logistics industry and knows both the players and the topics of the industry very well.

These are the talk participants

The NUFAM project team has been able to recruit industry players from a wide range of sectors as discussion partners.

  • Christian Bodi will take part in the talk. He is the managing director of logistics at the Karlsruhe-based drugstore company dm, where he is responsible for a new hydrogen project as well as one involving e-trucks. Since March, dm has been supplying its Nuremberg shops with hydrogen-powered trucks. Bonn dm shops have recently been supplied with new goods by purely electrically powered E-Actros trucks. Bodi will give an insight into the experiences with both projects so far and report on strengths and weaknesses from everyday life.
  • Björn Reckhorn from Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Thermal Transport Europe will join the panel. The company offers solutions for the electrification of refrigerated vehicles.
  • Kurt Siglwill also be present. Sigl is the president of the German eMobility Association and a strong advocate of electric drive technology, and not just by virtue of his office.
  • Dr. Olaf Toedter from the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) will complete the panel. Dr. Toedter heads the "InnoFuels" department. This was newly founded and is supported by the Federal Ministry of Transport with more than five million euros. The goal is to bundle all research in the field of synthetic fuels and thus make e-fuels more usable.

The NUFAM Media Day starts at 10.30 a.m. in the Atrium of Messe Karlsruhe. After introductory words by Britta Wirtz, Managing Director of Messe Karlsruhe, and Jochen Bortfeld, NUFAM Project Manager, the talk will begin and last until around 12 noon. Afterwards, there will be the opportunity for further discussions in a convivial atmosphere.

NUFAM heads for record output

The NUFAM commercial vehicle trade fair in the Karlsruhe exhibition halls takes place from 21 to 24 September. It has long been one of the leading events in the industry - and this year it is bigger than ever before. A good six months before the fair, 85 percent of the available stand space has already been booked.

With 50,000 square metres of hall capacity and another 30,000 square metres of available outdoor and special exhibition space, visitors will be presented with a comprehensive portfolio in all weight and equipment classes. This also includes live formats such as the Demo Park with presentations by exhibitors, the Municipal Miles with a wide range of vehicles for public use and the extended offer of test drives for visitors.

E-drives, hydrogen and synthetic fuels

One of the focal points at NUFAM 2023 will be the topic of alternative drive technologies. "We are pleased to welcome numerous key players of alternative charging infrastructures and suppliers at NUFAM 2023 for the first time. These include manufacturers of hydrogen filling stations and electric charging stations. But synthetic fuels will also be a topic. So the complete range of different forms of energy will be on site at the commercial vehicle trade fair," says Jochen Bortfeld, NUFAM Project Manager at Messe Karlsruhe.

Federal and state governments assume patronage

The importance of NUFAM 2023 is made clear by the fact that both the federal government and the state of Baden-Württemberg are patrons of the commercial vehicle trade fair. Baden-Württemberg's Minister of Transport, Winfried Herrmann, will take part in a panel discussion on the topic of "Climate-neutral transport on the road" during the opening of the fair on 21 September.

"The dual patronage by the Federal Ministry of Transport and Digital Affairs and by the Ministry of Transport of Baden-Württemberg underlines the role that NUFAM has carved out for itself in Karlsruhe. The commercial vehicle industry plays a decisive role in the fight against climate change. It is therefore all the more important that alternative drives and charging infrastructures are the focus of NUFAM", says Beate Frères, Division Manager in the Own Exhibitions Division at Messe Karlsruhe.

Vehicles in the exhibition hall

Karlsruhe, 10th of november 2022 - Around 22.000 visitors who encountered more than 350 manufacturers and service providers from 13 countries - that is the record of NUFAM 2021, underlining the trade fair's position as a leading trade fair for the German and European commercial vehicle sector. Preparations for the eighth edition of NUFAM are already in full swing. It will take place from 21 to 24 September 2023 at the Karlsruhe Exhibition Centre.

Suppliers, service providers and anyone who wants to present their products and get up close and personal with other players in the industry can still secure an early-booking discount on stand space until 25 November.

"The demand is great. It‘s already clear that we can build on pre-pandemic times. Far more than 400 leading manufacturers, dealers, suppliers and service providers from the LCV to trailer sectors will present themselves at NUFAM 2023 and show the innovations of the industry. At the moment, a large part of the available stand space has already been firmly booked or specifically optioned", says Jochen Bortfeld, Project Manager of the commercial vehicle trade fair in Karlsruhe.

A look at the well-known brands from the entire spectrum of the industry shows that, in addition to classic drive systems, New Mobility has also long since arrived in Karlsruhe. Acute topics such as electric, hydrogen and fuel cell drives are increasingly coming into focus at NUFAM 2023 and taking up more space. Areas such as digital services and telematics, charging infrastructure and solutions for the last mile are also growing due to the participation of new industry players and are being rethought and redesigned in terms of space and planning.

Together with the existing exhibitors, the project team will analyse their previous trade fair appearances and provide support in planning the presentation for NUFAM 2023. Companies that are represented at NUFAM for the first time will also receive comprehensive advice on optimal placement and individualised stand solutions for a successful trade fair appearance.

Live, personal, safe: NUFAM

Karlsruhe, October 03, 2021 - The NUFAM commercial vehicle trade fair closes its halls with strong exhibitor and visitor numbers, matching pre-pandemic times at the last event in 2019. Around 22,000 visitors gathered information over four days from more than 350 manufacturers and service providers from 13 countries, representing the entire spectrum of the commercial vehicle industry. Participants at the first major industry get-together since the start of the pandemic gave top marks for the breadth and quality of the offerings, as well as the organization and the safety and hygiene concept. A higher proportion of trade visitors, greater coverage and personal exchange made NUFAM 2021 an all-round successful trade fair.

Britta Wirtz, Managing Director of Messe Karlsruhe: "Messe Karlsruhe has succeeded in firmly anchoring NUFAM in Europe. With the innovative technologies on display for alternative drives and sustainable-efficient solutions for the freight transport of tomorrow, NUFAM fits perfectly into the research landscape of the Karlsruhe technology region. For example, the Karlsruhe KIT presented its current research in the field of re-fuels and many other research institutions along the Rhine-Rail also showed brand-new results of their mobility research."

The exhibitors at NUFAM present innovative commercial vehicle technology from the fields of alternative drives, digitalization and sustainability. Various research projects show the changes the commercial vehicle industry will face in the coming years. The spectrum ranges from solar cells on truck roofs to synthetic fuels and the use of artificial intelligence in transportation.

Jochen Bortfeld, NUFAM project manager, is pleased with the successful conclusion of the trade fair: "NUFAM 2021 was a complete success. We were able to continue the good visitor numbers of the trade fair - despite the pandemic! The exhibitors and visitors made optimal use of the fair to finally exchange ideas in person again and to do business directly at the vehicle. This is what NUFAM stands for and we were able to make this possible, including the highest safety standards and a good and, above all, flexible organization. I am very pleased about how positively the trade show was received by all participants."

NUFAM with increased reach and willingness to invest

The innovation and investment dynamics in the commercial vehicle industry are reflected at the trade show: the trade visitor share as well as the willingness to invest have increased compared to 2019. Investments, particularly in the mid-six-figure range, have increased. In addition, more than 79 percent of visitors plan to buy or order something after the show. Personal exchange is particularly important to visitors and exhibitors. This is also confirmed by Thomas Rosenberger, spokesman for Kögel Trailer GmbH: "It was great to finally have a live event again. We were very enthusiastic about the response from the trade visitors and decision-makers and about the fact that a really large number of people came - from top-class fleet operators to drivers and fans. We had great conversations and sold a lot of vehicles. We were very happy to be able to be here again, to present ourselves and to talk about our products." Patrik Neuwinger, Head of Sales and Rental at Terberg Spezialfahrzeuge, has a similarly positive assessment of the trade fair appearance: "We are highly satisfied with the trade fair itself, with the visitors, with the visitor frequency and also with the quality of the discussions. We have experienced very great popularity and intend to appear here in the future with a somewhat changed offer from our side."

The longing for a live event was high and many visitors accepted long journeys to be part of it. The journey from over 300 km has increased by 5 percent compared to 2019. This is also confirmed by Ralf Merkelbach, Head of Key Account Management Large Fleets Europe at BPW Bergische Achsen Kommanditgesellschaft: "As exhibitors, we thrive on coming into contact with our customers here, and that's why trade fairs are extremely important for us. NUFAM itself has developed very well over the years. There have been trade visitors at the stand from neighboring countries such as Austria and also from all over Germany. For us, it was a great feeling to meet people again here at the first major commercial vehicle trade fair and, of course, to be able to show them our innovations that we have launched in the meantime during the pandemic."

NUFAM as a platform for premieres

Never before have so many premieres been shown as at this year's NUFAM. The exhibitors at NUFAM deliberately chose the first major commercial vehicle show as a platform for their new launches. In particular, they presented vehicle and product innovations in the areas of alternative drives, digitalization and sustainability. Manuel Dreher, Managing Director of DAF sales partner EBB-Truck-Center showed the premiere of the new more efficient and even safer DAF vehicle generation exclusively at NUFAM: "We are very satisfied, and so are our customers. We have received only positive feedback. Everyone is happy to be able to go to a trade fair again. With the new generation of DAF, which is being shown to the general public for the first time, we have a real visitor magnet at the stand. We have closed some deals, especially for the new vehicle. We are also very confident about the post-show business."

All participants rewarded Messe Karlsruhe with very high satisfaction ratings and a high recommendationrate. 93% of visitors gave the hygiene concept top marks. Around 97% of visitors are very satisfied with their visit to the trade fair overall. Jochen Bortfeld sums up: "In an initial survey, the exhibitors announced higher intentions to participate again. Our commitment and that of the exhibitors has paid off in full.

The next NUFAM will take place from September 21 to 24, 2023 at the Karlsruhe Exhibition Center.

Exhibitors present premieres and innovative new developments

Manufacturers’ brands will again be represented with large stand areas at NUFAM in 2021. In addition, innovations will be displayed by major players in the industry, including DAKO, F.X. Meiller, KEMPF Fahrzeugbau, Hiab, Hofmeister & Meincke, Kässbohrer, Krone, Kögel, Humbaur and many others. Alongside heavy and light commercial vehicles, bodies and trailers, visitors can also experience the newest loading cranes and truck-mounted forklifts live. In the field of digitalization, BPW Bergische Achsen, webfleet solutions and others will show their products. The range of exhibitors in the area of e-mobility will further expand thanks to the arrival of Quantron, König Metall, Powertec and Winter Fahrzeugtechnik.

Exhibitors have already announced vehicle and product premieres, innovations and other highlights to be shown at the trade fair. Volker Seitz from Quantron, which is exhibiting at NUFAM this year for the first time, explains why this e-mobility specialist is focusing on NUFAM: “We will be showing the Q-Light FCEV – the first van of its kind in Europe powered by H2 fuel cells. This trade fair is exactly the right platform for us to present our world premiere because we reach our target group here.”

New exhibitor Schmitz Cargobull will likewise unveil a premiere: “Personal contact and direct sharing with our customers: that’s what our business is all about. We were only able to digitally present our new EcoGeneration curtainsiders during the pandemic lockdown. Now we are presenting this sustainable curtainsider, which is designed for everyday transport, to a wider audience for the first time at NUFAM. The EcoFlex for reduced fuel consumption and lower CO2 emissions, and the S.KO COOL SMART refrigerated box with the Schmitz Cargobull S.CU transport refrigeration machine, can both be seen at our joint stand with the Kohrs company”, reports Boris Billich, Member of the Board of Schmitz Cargobull. Karlsruhe Trade Fair Company anticipates that many more premieres and new launches will further enliven this year’s stands at the trade fair.

The future-orientated topics of electromobility and autonomous driving will be just as much in focus as the perennial themes of energy efficiency, timesaving, cost reduction and driver shortages.

Themed areas and tours for efficient, clearly structured visits

Current transport solutions in all product segments will be displayed at NUFAM. The grouped thematic areas in the halls enable trade visitors to visit the fair in an efficient, well-structured manner. Numerous suppliers of workshop equipment and parts present themselves in the “Workshop, Parts, Accessories” area in Hall 1. Manufacturers of bodies and trailers predominate in Hall 2. Exhibitors showcase the latest telematics systems in the telematics area (Hall 3). Visitors will be able to inform themselves via lectures and discussion panels in the adjoining Telematics Forum. Light commercial vehicles, along with corresponding bodies and trailers, can likewise be found in Hall 3. Visitors will find the “Tyre” area with its well-known manufacturers and dealers in the dm-arena.

The four exhibition halls and the outdoor area are complemented by the Municipal Mile (between Halls 1 and 2 as well as in Hall 3 and the dm-arena), where commercial vehicles for the municipal sector are presented, as well as by the Demopark with presentations of exhibitors’ products and a comprehensive programme for the public. The outdoor area will feature a particularly large number of vehicles and bodies this year, so visitors can experience new models not only inside the halls, but also outdoors.

Visitors can also take guided tours of NUFAM. In addition to the Classic guided tour, which provides a broad overview of the fair’s highlights, New Mobility tours are also offered: here, exhibitors will showcase their innovations in the fields of alternative drives and digital assistance systems, and also present vehicle and product premieres related to New Mobility.

The programme for trade visitors provides practical information

As an informative platform and meeting place for face-to-face networking within the industry, NUFAM 2021 will again offer Specialist Days devoted to telematics, municipal vehicles and load securing as well as lectures and roundtable discussions on current topics facing the industry. Themes and issues that are much discussed in the commercial vehicle industry will be examined critically and with a focus on solutions during the four days of the trade fair. The major panel discussion at the opening on the first day will be followed by the Load Securing Forum on Friday and Saturday and by the popular Truck Driver Forum on Sunday. The future-orientated topics of electromobility and autonomous driving will be just as much in focus as the perennial themes of energy efficiency, timesaving, cost reduction and driver shortages. The programme for specialists will take into account technical and regulatory challenges facing the industry.

The highest standards of safety and hygiene at the trade fair

The team at Karlsruhe Trade Fair Centre places the utmost importance on high standards of hygiene and safety. Consultation and sales directly at the commercial vehicle will again be the focus of the upcoming event. Thanks to a comprehensive safety and hygiene concept, no restrictions are anticipated in face-to-face sharing between exhibitors and visitors. Online registration, a new admission system and the ample space available guarantee that visits to the trade fair will run smoothly: these aspects will not adversely affect the fair’s concept with presentations of vehicles and products. The hygienic concept, which is continuously coordinated with the responsible authorities, along with the protective measures in place at the time of the fair, assure safe visits with sufficient freedom of movement and adequate space for networking in a pleasant atmosphere.

NUFAM – The Trade Fair for Commercial Vehicles will take place as planned at the fairgrounds in Karlsruhe from 30 September to 3 October 2021. The organizers at Karlsruhe Trade Fair Company are confident and see a bright green light for this first major gathering of the commercial vehicle industry since the start of the pandemic. With the amendments to the Corona Ordinance of the State of Baden-Württemberg that took effect on 7 June 2021, the trade fair industry is looking confidently toward reopening, the official ordinance serving as the basis for planning the upcoming seventh edition of NUFAM. In accord with the latest incidence statistics and with implementation of all necessary protective and hygienic measures, NUFAM 2021 will once again combine current technology and mobility concepts of the future.

High level of participation among exhibitors with focus on New Mobility

Project Manager Jochen Bortfeld comments on the planning status: “We see the pressure to innovate in the industry and are convinced that we can offer a safe atmosphere for urgently needed face-to-face sharing. Anticipation of NUFAM as the year’s preeminent platform for investment and information is as strong as ever. This enthusiasm is also clearly expressed through the support we receive from our exhibitors. Together with them, we look forward to putting the pedal to the metal as we approach the homestretch leading to this year’s fair.”

More than 350 exhibitors from all sectors will present their latest transport solutions on a total of 70,000 square metres in the Karlsruhe Trade Fair’s halls and on the adjacent outdoor campus. The trade fair for commercial vehicles will also focus on the latest developments in all aspects of the freight mobility of the future, including a variety of practice-oriented formats ranging from lecture series and discussion roundtables to New Mobility tours. Despite the pandemic, NUFAM is not losing its international character: exhibitors from other European countries in particular – especially Italy, France and the Benelux countries – will present their innovations at the upcoming fair.

Secure hygienic and protective concept in times of pandemic

The team at Karlsruhe Trade Fair Centre places great importance on rigorous hygienic and protective measures. The hygienic concept, which is continuously coordinated with the responsible authorities, as well as the protective measures in effect when the event is held, are designed to ensure a safe visit to the trade fair with sufficient freedom of movement and ample space for networking in a pleasant atmosphere.

The lively interest among exhibitors reflects NUFAM’s importance as a platform for information and investment. When the fair opens in the autumn of 2021, it will be the first major meeting for the diverse commercial vehicle industry since the beginning of the pandemic. Karlsruhe Trade Fair Centre remains in close contact with authorities, exhibitors and partners to assure the safety of all participants.

“We want to offer the commercial vehicle industry this urgently needed platform for personal sharing. Since September, the trade fair industry has shown the effectiveness of hygienic and safety measures adapted in accord with the current risk of infection. Karlsruhe Trade Fair Centre too is very well positioned in this respect: we constantly update our safety concepts in line with the pandemic’s development. Based on this forward-looking planning, we see a green light for NUFAM 2021”, says Britta Wirtz, Managing Director of Karlsruhe Trade Fair Centre.

Project Manager Jochen Bortfeld is similarly confident that NUFAM is indeed well positioned: “We are receiving plenty of positive feedback from the industry for our trade fair’s concept, which focuses on presentations of vehicles and products, while simultaneously providing ample space for personal sharing. We already have numerous confirmed bookings: former exhibitors and new interested parties alike are eager to find their way back into the trade fair business.”

For the upcoming NUFAM, Karlsruhe Trade Fair Centre expects stable numbers of exhibitors and a consistently high level of occupancy with 400 exhibitors on more than 70,000 square metres. The technology on NUFAM’s outdoor area has been upgraded, thus opening up new design potentials for presentations at exhibitors’ stands. The positioning of the stands on the exhibition grounds is currently being planned. Exhibitors who reserve their stands at NUFAM before 27 November 2020 can take advantage of reduced-rate early-bird conditions.

NUFAM – Trade Fair for Commercial Vehicles

As a leading trade fair for the commercial vehicle industry, NUFAM combines the latest technology with mobility concepts for the future. The seventh NUFAM – Trade Fair for Commercial Vehicles will take place at Karlsruhe Trade Fair Centre from 30 September to 3 October 2021. Exhibitors will present the industry’s full spectrum of products and services: vehicles in all weight classes, e-mobility, alternative drives and hybrid systems, bodies and trailers, cranes and hoists, tyres, parts, accessories, workshop equipment, telematics solutions and services. As a top-class industry meeting place for personal networking, NUFAM also offers Expert Days focussing on telematics, workshops, municipal vehicles and load securing, as well as lectures and discussions exploring current topics in the industry.
